Sardinians spend an average of 389 euros per month on the purchase of food and non-alcoholic drinks. It is the lowest value among the Italian regions .

The data emerges from a Coldiretti analysis based on Istat data on family consumption in 2022. A snapshot of regional eating habits which sees Campania families in first place, with an expenditure of 552 euros per month recording a +42 % compared to those on the island .

«In Italy the table is an important component of family spending of which it absorbs on average around 18% of the resources with an average monthly value per family of 482 euros per month, in other words less than one euro in five is spent on eating with a marked increase in the incidence of other expenditure items such as housing, clothing, transport and communications ", explains Coldiretti.

An expenditure item in which Sardinia is last, with a big difference also compared to the penultimate, Trentino Alto Adige with 445 euros per family . The other regions: 454 in Puglia, 457 in Liguria, 466 in Emilia Romagna and Lazio, 468 in Lombardy, 469 in Veneto, 471 in Friuli Venezia Giulia, 473 in Marche, 481 in Piedmont, 484 in Abruzzo, 491 in Basilicata and Tuscany , 492 in Calabria, 499 in Umbria and Molise, 511 in Valle d'Aosta, 546 in Sicily and 552 in Campania.

As for the individual items in the food shopping cart, there is an increase compared to 2021 for categories such as meat, olive oil, sugar and sweets, while spending on fruit and vegetables, bread and pasta, fish, milk and cheese decreases.

At a national level, the heaviest item in the family shopping cart remains that of meat and cured meats with 104 euros per month, ahead of pasta, pizza, bread and cereals (76 euros) , while vegetables come in third place with 61 euros. This is followed by milk, cheese and eggs, at 58 euros, and fruit at 41 euros, just ahead of fish (38 euros). Again: ready-made foods 30 euros, sugar and sweets 21, olive oil with butter and other condiments 15.
