Exports to Sardinia are struggling to return to pre-pandemic levels.

According to an analysis carried out by the Study Office of Confartigianato Imprese Sardegna on data from the Tagliacarne / Unioncamere Study Center, only 633 companies on the island sold their goods abroad in the first half of 2021.

Just 0.6% of the island's entrepreneurial activities had commercial relations with the countries of the Old Continent or the rest of the world, selling products for 2.5 billion euros.

Numbers that place Sardinia in fourth from last place in Italy in the ranking of exporting regions.

"The absolute numbers, and as a percentage, of Sardinian companies that have embarked on the export route are really small and place us at the bottom of the ranking - explained the president of Confartigianato Imprese Sardegna, Maria Amelia Lai -, for this it is necessary that the entrepreneurial system and the institutions work together to increase both the numbers of companies that want to focus on foreign markets and increase their turnover ".

"Entrepreneurial activities are increasingly 'hungry' for export initiatives and therefore the effort that every single company is making on the training front is to be appreciated. To enter foreign markets, in fact, skills that not all companies have are required. We hope that, after this bad moment of emergency, with the Region we can reschedule the training activities and propose new calls on internationalization ", underlined the regional secretary, Daniele Serra.

The strongest Sardinian companies in exports are those that market products derived from the refining of crude oil, those that operate in the heavy industry and cheese-making sectors, but also small and medium-sized enterprises.
