Business in crisis, low birth rates, fluctuating tourism, and a generally low quality of life. Sardinia continues to struggle in the island's main economic and social indicators, according to Italia Oggi's 2024 ranking, which analyzes nine key dimensions such as business and employment, education, population, safety, and health.

Cagliari remains the only bright spot, with a strong healthcare system (ranking eighth nationally) and acceptable performance in education, tourism, and income.

Sassari takes a step forward , gaining eight spots to 76th place, while Nuoro slips to 84th . Southern Sardinia and Oristano fare worse, rated "insufficient" at 95th and 87th place, respectively.

The overall economic situation is critical: all Sardinian provinces rank between 76th and 84th in the business rankings , with Cagliari slightly better positioned, but still far from the most dynamic centers of the country.

Tourism partially saves Cagliari and northern Sardinia, while the rest of the island marks time.

There's good news on the security front: Sardinia is among the most peaceful regions in Italy, with Oristano ranking second in the national rankings for low crime rates, and Cagliari and Southern Sardinia 12th and 13th, respectively. However, social security is inadequate in almost all provinces, along with population and birth rates, which are worrying signs for cohesion and future development.

"The island is paying the price on almost all economic and social fronts," the experts comment. "Sardinia remains on the margins of national growth, with a few local exceptions such as Cagliari and some areas in the North."

In short, the island seems condemned to a fragile economy, where quality of life, income, and birth rate remain the Achilles heels of a region rich in potential but still incapable of fully exploiting it.
