Rail traffic between Chilivani and Porto Torres will be suspended from January 19 to June 13, 2026. This suspension is designed to allow for the launch of a major construction project by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (FS Italiane Group), aimed at modernizing the line and offering ever-higher-quality services.

The main project involves laying the foundations for the new Muros Paramassi tunnel, work that began in 2023 and which, in its final phase, will lead to the construction of a structure almost 500 meters long.

The overall investment, co-financed by the Region, is approximately €50 million and will involve over 100 technicians and workers from RFI and its contractors. This project represents a significant step towards improving rail connections and mobility in northern Sardinia.

The work is necessary to protect the railway line in a section particularly exposed to soil instability and hydrogeological instability. The work program also includes measures to reduce hydrogeological risk in the Calamasciu River area, the consolidation of several sections of the line, the complete renewal of the tracks, and the maintenance of the switches.

Significant technological improvements are also planned: the latest-generation BCA Progress Rail train distancing system will be installed, along with the replacement of worn safety equipment cables and the activation of new level crossing protection systems.

All interventions will be carried out in accordance with European safety standards. Finally, preparatory activities will be carried out for the implementation of the ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) technology. The technological upgrade with the ERTMS system, the same system used on high-speed lines, will ensure greater infrastructure reliability, resulting in improved regularity, traffic flow, and service quality.

In addition to higher performance, ERTMS also allows for savings in management and maintenance costs compared to traditional signalling systems.

All trains arriving or departing from Sassari and Porto Torres Marittima stations are subject to route restrictions, with possible schedule changes or cancellations. Furthermore, connections to Olbia Terranova and Cagliari may also be affected by schedule changes, route restrictions, cancellations, or rescheduling with new trains.

Trains subject to route restrictions or cancellations may be rescheduled for buses.
