Restrictions and precautionary measures for blood donations have been introduced in several areas of Italy due to West Nile virus. Among the 31 provinces identified by the National Blood Center is Oristano, where—as in other at-risk areas—blood and blood component donors must undergo a NAT test or observe a 28-day suspension if they have stayed even just one night in the area during the 2025 season.
The provinces identified are: Rome, Naples, Turin, and Venice. For the United States and Canada, the measure is in effect year-round. The provinces affected by the restrictive measures and cited by the National Blood Center are: Bologna, Caserta, Cremona, Ferrara, Forlì-Cesena, Frosinone, L'Aquila, Latina, Lecce, Lecco, Lodi, Mantua, Milan, Modena, Naples, Novara, Oristano, Padua, Parma, Pavia, Piacenza, Ravenna, Reggio Emilia, Rome, Rovigo, Turin, Treviso, Udine, Varese, Venice, and Verona. As for EU countries: Greece (Western Attica and Piraeus peripheral units) and Romania (Sălaj district).
