An intersectoral technical meeting met this morning in Oristano to review West Nile. The meeting, requested by the Special Commissioner of Local Health Authority 5, Dr. Federico Argiolas, and coordinated by the General Directorate of the Regional Health Department, was attended, among others, by Local Health Authority 5 of Oristano, represented by the Commissioner himself and the directors of the Department of Hygiene and Health Prevention and the Animal Health Service, Dr. Maria Valentina Marras and Dr. Enrico Vacca, and by the Province of Oristano, represented by Commissioner Battista Ghisu and his staff.
Among the points raised, the Local Health Authority (ASL) and the Province agreed on the need for greater commitment from private entities, including agricultural and livestock farms, to carry out internal larval control interventions . The Province of Oristano, which has published a call for applications for 10 new exterminators, reiterated the need for increased regional funding to carry out even more widespread interventions throughout the Oristano area.
During the meeting, it was decided to address the emergency at a local level, expanded to include all local institutions , as well as at a forthcoming regional level, and to explore additional tools to combat mosquito infestation. Furthermore, the need for more comprehensive monitoring of the provincial territory, including both public and private areas, was emphasized. A renewed commitment to raising public awareness was also made.
Meanwhile, a new case has been reported in the area: a patient over seventy from Paulilatino, admitted to Businco Hospital in Cagliari.
This brings the number of human cases of West Nile virus confirmed in the province of Oristano in 2025 to 31.
The epidemiological investigation has already begun, and the infected person's residential area has been cordoned off to allow for disinfection within 200 meters of the home.
