Fifth case of West Nile fever in Sardinia , again in the province of Oristano. A 50-year-old man presented to the emergency room of San Martino Hospital with a high fever and symptoms consistent with West Nile. The clinical suspicion was confirmed by laboratory tests. After initial treatment, the patient was discharged and returned home.
The Prevention Department of the Local Health Authority (ASL 5) of Oristano immediately began an epidemiological investigation and preventive measures, which include disinfecting the area where the person who contracted the virus lives.
The first case of West Nile virus dates back to last May and involved a person over sixty; the second, a person over ninety who, after contracting the virus and developing the disease, died. The third case, a person over sixty, was discharged from the Oristano hospital and returned home; and the fourth, an eighty-five-year-old, is still under observation at San Martino Hospital.
«We once again invite citizens, especially the frail and elderly», reiterates the director of the prevention department Maria Valentina Marras , «to prevent any risky situations and to protect themselves from the bites of this insect with all the tools we remember: avoid stagnant water, protect yourself with repellent sprays and long clothing when outdoors, screen your home with mosquito nets».
