A case of West Nile fever has been reported in Macomer, prompting the mayor to order preventive measures. Mayor Riccardo Uda , at the request of the Nuoro Local Health Authority, issued a mayoral ordinance prescribing measures to control West Nile Disease, Usutu Virus, and other viral diseases transmitted by insect vectors that are dangerous to humans and animals.
The ordinance, the Municipality announced, was made necessary following the report of a human case of infection in a patient in the Infectious Diseases department of the San Francesco hospital in Nuoro, residing in the municipality of Macomer and who stayed—during the incubation period of the disease—in the municipality of Macomer and in the town of Bosa, in the province of Oristano.
The ordinance requires avoiding any stagnant water by emptying or hermetically covering any container, tub, fountain, or outdoor tire. Keeping the grounds clear of brushwood and debris to prevent larvae breeding grounds is also recommended. Finally, it is recommended to protect yourself from bites by using mosquito nets, light-colored clothing, and skin repellents, and to periodically treat drains and plant pots with larvicides or household insecticides.
