A gigantic treasure lost along the leaks in the pipelines . Over 340 million cubic meters of water , as if the reserve collected in the heyday of the Cantoniera dam on the Omodeo, the largest reservoir in Sardinia, ended up in the sea .

In this land suffering from extreme thirst, a huge amount of water is lost every year; an enormous waste (net of that thrown into the sea when dam gates are opened) due to antiquated pipelines and sporadic, non-widespread water-saving measures . On the island, ISTAT found, 51.3% of the water introduced is lost along the network : 417 liters per capita per day reduced to 203 liters actually served. In practice, 200 liters of water per day for every Sardinian: only Basilicata, Sicily, and Abruzzo fare worse.

And while losses are decreasing in large urban centers thanks to the start of Abbanoa's network efficiency improvement project, which should be completed next year, the greatest waste occurs along the pipelines in the fields, i.e., in the agricultural sector, where no action has yet been taken, partly due to bureaucratic delays.
