For the first time in Sardinia, a helicopter was used to identify a water main fault from above. It happened on the evening of August 14th, the eve of Ferragosto (August 15th), in Gallura, specifically in Arzachena, an area experiencing a massive influx of tourists these days and a resulting exponential increase in water consumption.

In the late afternoon, Abbanoa's remote monitoring systems began reporting a drastic reduction in water flow in the "Liscia" aqueduct, fed by the Agnata water purification plant, serving the municipalities of Olbia, Loiri Porto San Paolo, Golfo Aranci, Padru, Telti, Monti, Arzachena, La Maddalena, and San Teodoro. The aqueduct extends for approximately 30 kilometers and, especially inland, passes through rural areas that are difficult to reach.

It would have been virtually impossible to locate the point of the rupture before sunset with ordinary inspections. Abbanoa therefore decided to rent a helicopter to quickly fly over the entire aqueduct . From the air, the company reports, it was possible to detect flooding in the middle of the Mediterranean scrub.

Abbanoa's emergency response teams then went into action and worked nonstop during the night between August 14th and 15th to repair the fault and restore full operation of the Liscia aqueduct.
