It costs over a million euros a year in electricity to pump water from the Monteleone Roccadoria reservoir and deliver it to the taps of Macomer and other towns in the Marghine area. This cost inevitably ends up on the bills of all Sardinians.
Abbanoa's solution to avoiding this waste of resources and addressing ongoing emergencies, especially drought, is to draw water from the springs of Sant'Antioco, Scano Montiferro.
One solution, in addition to ensuring good water supply, especially during lean periods, allows for significant resource savings. The project, already funded for some time, has so far not been implemented due to the refusal of the Scano Montiferro municipal administration.
For Abbanoa, however, this is public water and the connection to the Marghine water network would not jeopardize Scano Montiferro's water supply, but rather aims to utilize the excess water that currently ends up in the sea.
The situation in Macomer, Borore, Birori, Dualchi, and Noragugume remains an emergency. A special roundtable, proposed by the "Macomer 2030" council group, is being requested. This roundtable will involve the municipal councils, the Region, Abbanoa, and all the proposed entities, such as ENAS, ADIS, and EGAS, to clarify the investments needed and those still lacking to effectively address the challenges posed by climate change in the short and medium term.
"Macomer 2030" proposes focusing on advanced technologies and innovative strategies to optimize water use and prevent the environmental and social desertification of the area. Meanwhile, the municipal administration is urging residents to conserve water as much as possible and avoid waste. Abbanoa is also monitoring the Sant'Antioco springs in Scano Montiferro to assess their seasonal trends. To this end, the president of Abbanoa recently met with the municipal administrators of Macomer.
