Serpentara Island—34 hectares off the coast of Villasimius, in the heart of the Capo Carbonara marine protected area—is up for sale again, and this time it could become public property.

The Regional Council has submitted an amendment to the budget adjustment authorizing the expenditure of eight hundred thousand euros "for the acquisition of coastal properties subject to full protection to be subjected to environmental and landscape conservation and enhancement policies," including Serpentara. The proposal comes from the Department of the Environment, led by Rosanna Laconi, and the goal is to ensure the island's regional public ownership "as a greater guarantee of protection and safeguarding of the collective interest."

Serpentara, on the other hand, constitutes a biotope belonging to the list of sites of community interest and special protection areas .

The granite island, home to the Spanish Tower of San Luigi and the Tirrenia ferry that ran aground almost thirty years ago, belongs to Fabio Sbianchi, a 62-year-old Roman entrepreneur who purchased it in 2018 to lend it free of charge to the Capo Carbonara Marine Reserve.
