Three days of devotion, tradition, folklore, and music. From today until Saturday, August 15, 2026, Villasalto celebrates Saint Christopher with a rich calendar of religious and civic events organized by the 86/96/06 Committee , under the patronage of the Municipality.
The festivities begin this afternoon at 6:00 PM in the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, where Holy Mass will be celebrated in honor of Saint Christopher. At 7:00 PM, a procession on foot will take place to the church dedicated to the Saint, accompanied by folk groups, knights, and the sound of launeddas and the Villasalto accordion.
This year, however, there will be a change from the originally announced tradition. Due to the lockdown imposed for bovine dermatitis, the Peddiu brothers' oxen will not be able to attend the celebrations . The Committee explained that they had hoped until the very end that they would be able to participate. Saint Christopher will still be carried on a float, as per tradition , thus maintaining one of the most heartfelt elements of the celebration.
The first day's civic program will kick off at 10:00 PM with the 23rd Folk Festival , presented by Giuliano Marongiu . The folk groups San Cristoforo from Villasalto, Civitas Mariana from Luogosanto, Abba Frida from Arzana, and Sos Corrìolos from Neoneli will participate. From 10:30 PM, in Piazza Santa Barbara, there will also be music with the group Dilliriana .
Religious celebrations will continue on Friday, August 14. At 7:00 pm, the Vigil Mass of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be celebrated in the Church of San Cristoforo. At 8:00 pm, the procession will depart from the church toward the town center, following which the traditional blessing of cars will take place in front of the Villasalto Town Hall , a rite particularly linked to San Cristoforo, the patron saint of travelers.
Friday evening will be dedicated to music and dance: the Stefania & Daniela orchestra group will perform from 10 pm . The social program will close on Saturday, August 15th , with a dance evening starting at 10 pm with the Três Passos group.
This event continues to represent one of the most heartfelt moments of the Villasaltese summer, combining faith, popular traditions, folklore, and music. Despite the absence of oxen due to measures related to bovine dermatitis, the Committee has chosen to keep alive the ritual of the San Cristoforo cart, in keeping with a tradition deeply rooted in the community.
