A fire this early afternoon destroyed part of the Porto Corallo campsite in Villaputzu. The flames ravaged the wooden structure that served as a restaurant and pizzeria, known as La Rotonda. The campsite—closed for five years—had recently been sold by the municipality to a company with registered offices in Cagliari. It was scheduled to reopen this summer (but they will attempt to reopen anyway, despite what has just happened). The San Vito firefighters, the Carabinieri, and the Villaputzu Forestry Corps arrived on the scene. An investigation was launched immediately to identify those responsible.

"We still don't know whether the fire that hit the campsite roundabout was started deliberately or not," said Villaputzu Mayor Sandro Porcu, who also arrived on the scene with the city councilors, "but there is little doubt. There will be investigations to determine any responsibilities, and I sincerely hope that they will lead to the identification and punishment of those responsible for this despicable act."

According to the mayor, "there's very little doubt that it was intentional." This is a severe blow for Villaputzu, "but I'm convinced," he added, "that our resolve will remain unwavering and our commitment will never waver, always for the good of the country."
