"Finally, some good news about the iron bridge." The announcement comes from the mayor of Villaputzu , but it doesn't mean the bridge will reopen to traffic. The work along the former state road 125, which connects the town to Muravera, will remain closed, continuing to cause inconvenience to residents of the Sarrabus area.
Today, the Metropolitan City of Cagliari tore up the contract with the company that had been awarded the contract to upgrade the bridge, which has been closed for safety reasons since early December 2023. The official reason is "serious breach of contract."
The decision, contained in a resolution from the Mobility sector, comes after numerous reports of significant delays in the execution of the work and after the company noted the lack of "any suitable measures to overcome the critical issues" identified.
The work, for which over €3.6 million was allocated, was awarded in August 2023, and the contract was signed in November. It was expected to last about a year and a half. Two years later, in May 2025, a contract for a modification was signed. Two extensions were added, extending the deadline to August 2026.
But the end is still far away and problems remain , so "after four service orders and ten technical notes" the project has been halted. For Sandro Porcu , mayor of Villaputzu, this is "a very important and long-awaited step," he wrote on Facebook. "Our thanks go to those responsible for the process, to the Ponte di Ferro committee, and to all the citizens of Sarrabus who, for several days, through demonstrations, assemblies, petition drives, and sit-ins, have contributed to maintaining high awareness of the serious problem facing our area and to reaching this fundamental step. We hope for a real and rapid resumption and completion of the work."
