The rescue operation for two hikers in difficulty along a trail in the Oridda area, in the Villacidro area, concluded shortly before three this morning .

The two, aged 39 and 35 respectively, were caught in the darkness yesterday evening and called for help, raising the alarm around 8 pm to the Cagliari Fire Brigade Operations Centre , which in turn activated the Sardinia Alpine and Speleological Rescue Service.

The rescue operation immediately dispatched ten technicians from the Cagliari and Medio Campidano stations and the support of the Italian Air Force , which intervened with the helicopter of the 80th SAR Centre of the 15th Wing of Decimomannu.

During the first overflight, the helicopter crew identified and geolocated the two hikers inside the Oridda canal using the Artemis system but, due to the particularly inaccessible characteristics of the area and the absence of suitable points , it was not possible to directly recover them on board the aircraft .

Thanks to the location obtained by the crew and transmitted to the teams on the ground, the Alpine and Speleological Rescue technicians, including a doctor, were able to reach the two hikers by following the path , while the Italian Air Force helicopter, which had returned to Decimomannu, remained available for any recovery intervention should the two's health conditions require air transport.

Once the two hikers were reached, their condition was checked and technicians escorted them back to their cars. Firefighters were also present during the search.
