Vernaccia launches the challenge. Last October 28th was a historic day: the Consortium for the protection and enhancement of Vernaccia doc .
An important step to promote the typical wine of the Orro area as confirmed by the founding members of the new body Mauro Contini of the Attilio Contini winery (appointed president), Davide Orro of the Orro family farm (vice president) , Giuseppe Ponti (Cantina della Vernaccia), Gianni Serra (Fratelli Serra winery), Mauro Putzolu (S'Anatzu winery), Giuseppe Ponti (Il Melograno winery). The founding members accepted Coldiretti Oristano's invitation and were technically supported by the agronomist-oenologist Aldo Buiani. Fundamental was the bill 293 “Enhancement of the Vernaccia grape and Vernaccia di Oristano doc wine” presented in recent months by the Brothers of Italy deputy Francesco Mura, a proposal also shared by the regional councilors Antonio Mario Mundula and Fausto Piga.
“The Consortium represents a fundamental goal for the growth of our territory, of which the wine and the vine are integral parts . The companies that have established it have different histories and dimensions but they share a great love for Vernaccia, a distinctive element of the Tirso and Oristanese valleys ”, said the president Mauro Contini. The Consortium will take care of protecting, enhancing and providing information. Companies are ready to join forces, to project themselves on all markets.
Deputy Mura underlined a typical anomaly of Vernaccia which, “ if on the one hand it has reached a unique level of quality, on the other it seems destined for extinction . In 1971 the hectares destined to the Vernaccia vine were over 2,000, in 2019 they were reduced to 261. It is necessary for the Vernaccia world to unite and find market spaces at the level of the wine produced. The regional law proposal, which is now under the attention of the Fifth Council Commission, aims in this direction ”.
A path, the one started with the Consortium, which for the future also looks to the DOCG , considered a fundamental step by Mura. The same deputy wished to reiterate that "it is necessary to raise the level of denomination of wine".
Great satisfaction from Coldiretti, which played a fundamental role in supporting the companies that formed the Consortium. "The new body will take care of building projects for the promotion and development of Vernaccia - commented the director Emanuele Spanò and the provincial president Giovanni Murru - As an organization we believed from the first moment in a project of the territory for the territory that aims to protect a identity product of Oristano ”.
