The regional government has allocated two million euros in November for the redevelopment of the church of Santa Maria di Betlem in Sassari. This was stated this morning by Antonio Piu, regional councilor for Public Works, during the conference "Biodiversity Festival," promoted by the Masci 2 Sassari association, which took place in the cloister of the church of the same name. The sacred building has been closed for four years due to structural issues, an obstacle that, consequently, makes the spaces inaccessible to the faithful and also prevents the vow to the Virgin from being made inside, at the end of the Faradda, which was instead made in the square of Santa Maria.
"We have worked extensively on a shared path with the mayor , Giuseppe Mascia , the councilors, and the guardian, Father Salvatore Sanna , to restore one of the most precious assets in this region." "It is a cornerstone for the city of Sassari," he adds, "due to the relationship with the Guilds and the associations that support this church," Piu continues. He announces that the regional funding "will be granted to Sassari in November and will bring to completion a project that has been far too long in the making."
There is uncertainty, however, as to whether the Festha Manna will conclude, as per tradition, in the church on August 14, 2027. "I have been working to secure the funding," the regional councilor concludes, "and to ensure that the church can be redeveloped in the best possible way. The timetable will be decided by the Municipality with those responsible for the works." Last August, the mayor reported on a study and a mathematical calculation to be performed to evaluate, from a static and structural standpoint, certain elements of the future works. "These operations," he said, "cost €180,000 for the first item and €120,000 for the second." The Municipality had already identified the contractor to carry out this step.
