A new clinic supports women with twin pregnancies through every stage of the process, with specialized check-ups and targeted clinical and ultrasound monitoring. The service, launched by the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the University Hospital of Cagliari at the Casula Polyclinic, is directed by Professor Stefano Angioni and coordinated by gynecologists Stefania Sanna and Laura Suzzi . The goal is to ensure continuous care and early identification of potential risks for mother and child.
A twin pregnancy, explains Dr. Stefania Sanna, a gynecologist at the Duilio Casula Polyclinic, "is an extraordinary experience, but it requires particularly careful clinical monitoring , because it is associated with an increased risk of maternal and fetal complications compared to a singleton pregnancy." Among the main complications, she continues, "are prematurity, fetal growth disorders, hypertensive disorders, and gestational diabetes. In monochorionic pregnancies, specific complications related to shared placentas are added, including twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome."
The goal of the multiple pregnancy clinic, the specialist continues, "is to ensure specialized care and continuity of care throughout the obstetric journey, to monitor fetal growth and identify any pathological conditions early. The service will allow for targeted ultrasound and clinical monitoring , tailored to chorionicity and amnionicity, which are key factors in establishing the correct surveillance pathway."
To book outpatient appointments, says Dr. Sanna, "you need to contact the Policlinico CUP, with the agenda number 906 GINE 15. Appointments take place on Wednesday mornings in the outpatient clinics on the 3rd floor of Block Q of the Duilio Casula Policlinico."
Multiple pregnancies, concludes Stefania Sanna, " represent an increasingly significant obstetric condition . The increase observed in recent decades has been associated with the increasing maternal age at conception and the greater diffusion of medically assisted reproductive techniques."
