The 2013 tragedy dramatically exposed the fragility of our territory and its poor planning. Similar tragedies must be avoided, and we must work together to strengthen prevention, risk management, river basin management, waterway safety, and the primary and secondary infrastructure that truly protects a territory . We are committed to this.
Thus said the governor Alessandra Todde , recalling the devastation caused in Sardinia – exactly 12 years ago – by the Cleopatra flood .
"Twelve years ago, on November 18, 2013 , Sardinia was devastated by a flood that forever changed the face of the island," wrote the regional president in a Facebook post. She added: "An unprecedented amount of water swept away homes, roads, and entire communities in just a few hours. The fury of Cyclone Cleopatra devastated Olbia and Gallura in particular. Nineteen lives were lost across the island: nine in Olbia, including two children; four in Arzachena, an entire family; and other victims in Uras, Torpè, and the Nuoro area."
He then promised to work to improve safety against the risk of flooding, and a thought for the victims' relatives: "Our deepest sympathy and deepest sympathy go to the families of the Sardinian men and women who didn't return home that day. Our daily efforts are in their memory."
