Tradition, religion, and tourism: Holy Week rites begin in Cagliari
Departure today with the procession of the Holy Mysteries from Piazza San GiacomoReligion, tradition. And tourism too: the Holy Week rites begin in Cagliari. They begin today with the Procession of the Holy Mysteries from Piazza San Giacomo. They conclude on April 12th with a concert by the Collegium Kalaritanum Choir in the Church of San Pietro Apostolo.
The Archconfraternities of the Gonfalon of Sant'Efisio Martyr, of Solitude, of the Holy Crucifix, the Marian Congregation of Archers of San Michele, the Easter Confraternity-Parish of Sant'Eulalia and the Santa Maria Chiara Committee of Pirri will be taking part.
An edition that embraces both older generations and newer ones: children from Riva and Sacra Famiglia elementary schools participated in the official presentation of the program this morning. The graphic design of the flyers with the calendar of events was curated by students from the Foiso Fois Art High School.
The rites begin on Sunday, March 29th, with the blessing of the palms. Thursday will be the turn of the tour of the seven churches. Then, on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, S'Incontru. Side events include concerts in the churches of San Giacomo, Santo Sepolcro, and San Pietro Apostolo.
"It's a great team effort with the Archconfraternities," said City Councilor for Culture Maria Francesca Chiappe. "We participated together in a regional call for proposals for Holy Week events. This collaborative effort also involved students from two Cagliari primary schools and the young students of the FOIS (Fos). For us, this is an added reason for joy for this year's edition. It's not just a religious event, but one that strongly defines the city's identity, with its historic centers at the heart of the city. It's also a tourist attraction, as so many visitors come to participate. With the Holy Week Rites, even though Easter is very early this year, we can say that historically it marks the start of Cagliari's tourist season."
