It's the high cost of living for tourism . An unwanted effect of that holiday industry that on paper should bring well-being, but is ending up taking it away. Subtracting it. Zeroing it out. And it's not like there's anything to squander in Sardinia , with 69.3% of families having nothing left to put aside at the end of the month .

The mechanism is entirely economic: the increase in demand, from restaurants to the classic supermarket shopping, causes prices to rise . "Then the tourists leave, while the increases remain with the residents", comments bitterly Giorgio Vargiu , regional president of Adiconsum . It is precisely the consumer associations that take the snapshot of the surge in prices in a tourist season that on the Island promises to be a record one, with 20 million visitors.

For the shopping cart in the month of June alone there was a growth of 3.5% . And even going out for dinner, or lunch, requires a greater financial commitment: according to Federconsumatori the average increases are 2% in seaside resorts , with the result that if a family of four spent 259.60 euros last summer, this holiday will see the bill rise to 264.80 .

Price increases also in accommodation: Altroconsumo, in a June report dedicated to holidays, included Stintino and Villasimius in the list of the most expensive seaside resorts in Italy with an expense for a week in a hotel estimated at 1,269 and 1,194 euros respectively. And if for a beach umbrella and two sun loungers four years ago you spent 182 euros a week, now you have to take 212 euros out of your wallet.
