Too much waste in Caprera and La Maddalena: volunteers on the front lines, the incivility is endless.

Last Saturday, about forty volunteers from the "A Plastic-Free Archipelago" group organized a new environmental day, with the support of Delcomar, the National Park Authority, and the Municipality of La Maddalena. In the previous days, several volunteers, traveling by their own means, had identified new illegal dumping sites: garbage bags, appliances, tires, and tools abandoned in valuable areas of the island of Caprera and along the scenic road to La Maddalena.
The toll is heavy: approximately three tons of waste collected and transported to the recycling center thanks to eight trucks and pickups provided by the volunteers themselves. In several areas, the cleanup was not completed; in others, ropes and harnesses had to be used to reach the most inaccessible spots.
"The volunteers' commitment is commendable," emphasizes Park Authority Director Giulio Plastina, "but we barely have time to clean up before someone continues to litter, without scruples or love for the land. Every act against the environment impacts future generations."
The self-funded group has been reporting the situation to the municipal administration for some time, but results have been slow to arrive. "There's no improvement," they say, "and even the cameras at the entrance to the Caprera bridge don't seem to be working." Since 2018, the association has collected 184,636 tons of waste, involving 3,383 people.
