"The destiny is partly written, and partly we are writing it now. The goal is to have a feasible project to present to the decision-making committee by the end of 2025. What matters is to make every Sardinian citizen understand what repercussions this project will have in the center of the island and in the entire region."

This was said by Alessandra Todde, who yesterday wished good luck to the scientists gathered in Cagliari on behalf of the Einstein Telescope, for the first of three days of meetings of the workshop “ET in Italy: science and technology for the candidacy”.

While waiting for a decision that will arrive between the end of 2026 and the beginning of 2027, «the first ET seed in Sardinia is born at Sos Enattos», explains Alessandro Cardini, director of the Cagliari section of the INFN, «SUnLab, a top-level research center, funded with 10 million by the Region and another 10 by the National Institute of Nuclear Physics, and by those of astrophysics and geophysics and volcanology. A new building will be built in place of the former Ri.mi.sa. warehouse, where granite was once worked. It will host research and development activities for the Einstein Telescope and low-noise physics experiments, as well as a geophysical observatory for the study of the geodynamics of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the internal structures of the Earth».

The opportunity

"We have what it takes to become the home of the Einstein Telescope," adds President Todde, "our commitment is clear: we want Sardinia to be not only a place to do research, but a point of reference for scientific and technological innovation. But the Einstein Telescope challenge is not only scientific: it is an opportunity to transform the Island, improving services, transportation, training and education. We note with bitterness that every year five thousand young people leave our region, that the Island is becoming increasingly older. Well, this is the opportunity to reverse the trend."
