Tomorrow, April 27th, schools in Laconi will remain closed. An unprecedented tick infestation in recent days has forced Mayor Salvatore Argiolas to close the building for several days, issuing an emergency ordinance.
The problem emerged last Tuesday. The headmaster of the Ales Comprehensive School reported to the municipal offices the presence of ticks in the outdoor areas of the Laconi preschool, elementary school, and middle school.
"We therefore immediately conducted an inspection to assess the situation and, unfortunately, we also confirmed the presence of these harmful insects," Mayor Argiolas explains. "This is why we immediately requested the Province of Oristano to take action for an urgent disinfestation. Fortunately, this was done. We cannot explain the cause of this significant presence of ticks. It is curious that they were only found in a specific area of the school grounds. I hope the disinfestation intervention will be effective." The order therefore provided for the closure of the building and the consequent suspension of teaching and work activities for April 24th. But the doors will not open tomorrow, Monday, April 27th, either.
The closure was necessary "to restore the essential hygienic conditions that allow for the normal conduct of teaching and professional activities, as well as to adopt all necessary measures to protect public health and the health of school environments." This is what the document states. Provincial technicians must essentially ensure that the parasites have been completely eradicated, given that these animals reproduce rapidly, laying eggs in moist, shaded areas.
