Three hundred thousand doses of the lumpy skin disease vaccine : the vaccination campaign will begin tomorrow, May 6th.
Sardinia is once again dealing with the disease—which had been hoped to be eradicated—which has already appeared on five farms between Sarrabus and Gerrei. And the region is trying to take action before the contagion reaches worrying proportions.
The vaccination plan "covers all establishments with cattle and buffalo and all animals kept in Sardinia, with priority given to restricted areas and farms that have been vaccinated for the longest time."
The doses are provided free of charge by the Region and operational management is entrusted to the veterinary services of the local health authorities (ASL), with the support of the IZS Sardegna.
Limpy Skin Disease is classified by European legislation as a category A disease, requiring immediate control and eradication interventions if detected.
For this reason, the Region "recommends that farmers fully participate in the vaccination campaign, to protect the island's cattle population, animal health, and the continuity of their farms' production."
The goal is to maintain the high level of immunity achieved and prevent further outbreaks of the disease. " The collaboration of farmers is crucial to protecting their farms and the entire Sardinian livestock sector," the regional health department emphasizes.
