Sardinia is short about 3,000 nurses to meet European standards. Now, with the recently signed Italy-India protocol, approximately 10,000 nurses will arrive in Italy: an army that will leave many young people who would have liked to work as nurses out of the picture.
Uil Fp Sardegna denounces this in a note signed by general secretary Mimmo Foddis, organizational secretary Massimo Marceddu and secretary Fabio Sanna.
"The recent Italy-India agreement cannot be passively accepted," the unionists emphasize. "While 15 Italian regions are suffering from a lack of applicants for the nursing tests, in Sardinia the number of Sardinian candidates is 800, compared to the approximately 330 positions available . The same goes," adds the UIL, "for Medical Radiology Technicians and Medical Laboratory Technicians . In the case of the former, out of 300 applicants for the tests, only 58 are recruited, while for the latter, out of 102 applicants, only 53 are absorbed."
The union calls it an "abhorrent and unacceptable situation. We reject our young people only to find ourselves chasing overseas solutions. Immediate political intervention is needed to solve this problem . Enough complaining and self-pity; the time has come for concrete action and a vision."
According to the union, action is needed "in the short to medium term, eliminating restricted enrollment and relocating. The Region is responsible for advocating for an extraordinary expansion of places and the relocation of teaching centers within the region at the Universities of Cagliari and Sassari, increasing current numbers and also providing scholarships for nursing students, TSRM students, and TSLB students. In the long term, policies for attraction and retention should be implemented."
"Importing professionals from abroad without changing the rules of the game is a losing investment . Uil Fp Sardegna," conclude Foddis, Marceddu, and Sanna, "calls for the immediate convening of a joint planning table—a true regional conference on healthcare and social professions—to plan the future of Sardinian workers and their health."
