Thirty years since the Chilivani massacre, the families: "Walter and Ciriaco remain deeply grieved."
The two soldiers were killed while trying to foil an attack on two armored vans"Every year for thirty years now, we have been asking in vain to know what happened to the Chilivani-Bis trial and why that trial was not held. Nothing will bring Walter back to us; we are still left with agonizing pain worse than a life sentence."
The words spoken by Roberto Frau, a former Carabiniere and brother of the soldier killed along with his colleague on August 16, 1995, are still filled with pain. Thirty years have passed since the death of two statesmen: Carabinieri officers Walter Frau, a 29-year-old from Ossi but resident in Porto Torres, and Ciriaco Carru, a 32-year-old from Bitti. The pain of the Chilivani massacre, in the Ozieri plain, still lingers, where this morning the sound of sirens reawakened the memory of a wound that is still open.
On the thirtieth anniversary of the Chilivani massacre, a commemoration was held in front of the two memorial stones in Pede 'e Semene, the location where the shooting occurred. Councilor Gavina Muzzetto, representing the Municipality of Porto Torres, attended the ceremony, along with the mayors of Ozieri, Chiaramonti, and Ardara, and all the family and friends.
Also in attendance were Sassari Prefect Grazia La Fauci, Police Commissioner Filiberto Mastrapasqua, and the provincial commander of the Guardia di Finanza Marco Sebastiani, as well as General Stefano Iasson, commander of the Sardinian Legion, and Colonel Massimiliano Pricchiazzi, provincial commander of Sassari. Also present was the regional secretary of the USIC (Unione Sindacale Italiana Cara) trade union, Massimo Deriu. Following Mass in the Basilica of Sant'Antioco di Bisarcio, celebrated by the Bishop of Ozieri, Corrado Melis, a new mural dedicated to the two Carabinieri, created by local artists Daniela and Anna Squintu, was unveiled on the facade of the "Fermi" technical institute.
