Third case of West Nile virus in the Oristano area. A 65-year-old man from Santa Giusta is hospitalized at San Martino Hospital after presenting to the emergency room with a high fever a few days ago. Doctors immediately suspected West Nile virus infection, a suspicion confirmed by laboratory tests.

The Prevention Department of the Oristano Local Health Authority has initiated an epidemiological investigation and implemented preventive measures. The case has already been reported to the Province, which is responsible for carrying out disinfection as soon as possible in the infected person's area of residence.

The first infection was confirmed in mid-May, the second dates back to a few days ago when a 90-year-old woman unfortunately died .

"We remind you that the virus is not transmitted from human to human, but exclusively through mosquito bites," explains Maria Valentina Marras, director of the Prevention Department. "We once again urge citizens, especially the frail and elderly, to protect themselves from mosquito bites." Avoiding stagnant water in plant pots, frequently changing water in pet bowls, and avoiding leaving children's pools or other water containers uncovered are also helpful in preventing the proliferation of mosquito larvae, which thrive in humid environments. "The third confirmed human case within a few days of the second," observes Grazia Cattina, general director of the Local Health Authority (ASL 5), "provides us with an indication of the extent of the virus's presence, also due to climate conditions favorable to mosquito breeding. Therefore, it is important to remain vigilant and take all measures to protect yourself and your loved ones."
