The Region has submitted the operational project for the remediation, safety, and environmental risk mitigation of the disused mining area of Montevecchio Ponente: this begins the process of remediation of this portion of the Sulcis Iglesiente Guspinese Site of National Interest. The overall cost of the project is estimated at approximately €40 million.
Currently, €26.8 million is available under the Cohesion Agreement, drawn from the 2021–2027 Development and Cohesion Fund. In addition to these resources, regional allocations totaling €1.2 million are earmarked for pumping tests necessary to define solutions for managing the open-water spill in Casargiu.
"The remediation of mining areas," emphasizes Rosanna Laconi, Regional Councilor for Environmental Protection, "is not just a technical requirement, but a responsible choice toward local communities and the future of the region. The remediation of Montevecchio Ponente represents a strategic intervention, both for reducing environmental risks and for the opportunity to restore value to an area of extraordinary historical and landscape importance."
The intervention, designed by Igea, focuses specifically on the soil matrix and has as its primary objective the reduction and elimination of risks to health and environmental quality, through targeted actions on the main danger areas identified by the risk analysis: open-pit mining excavations, mining landfills, and fine landfills.
