If a nurse is missing for health reasons, the ambulances stop. Thus Areus (Regional Emergency-Urgency Company of Sardinia) has issued a directive which provides for the possibility that the nurse – mandatory in the crews of medical patients – is replaced by a voluntary rescuer .
Provision against which the leader of the Progressive group in the Regional Council Francesco Agus rails, who speaks of an emergency-urgency system totally in disarray .
"Ambulances stopped due to lack of nurses or drivers, approximate management of the principals which complicates the work of the associations, lack of personnel, an opaque and seriously critical territorial reorganization plan and the case of medical patients with volunteers on board". Thus Agus lists the critical points of the system one by one, not at all satisfied with the reassurances provided during the hearing in the Health Commission by the general director of Areus Simonetta Cinzia Bettelini.
«The management's public statements are increasingly at odds with reality - explains Agus in a note -. We are especially concerned about the organizational limits of the rescue system», he continues, citing the cases that have recently occurred in Carbonia, Muravera, San Gavino, Olbia and Bosa .
"The absence of a nurse for health reasons has sent the system into chaos and risked paralyzing the emergency-urgency service," he recalls, then expressing all his doubts about the latest decisions taken by Areus. Indeed, the presence of a volunteer on board " can create problems at the level of insurance, legal protection and guarantees for the patient's health ".
According to the ministerial decrees, recalls the exponent of the opposition, medical ambulances «must have a crew made up of an imperative anesthetist-resuscitator and a professional nurse, as well as at least one rescuer-driver. It is not possible to replace a health professional with another figure ».
In this regard, Agus also announces a query to verify the compatibility of these decisions with regulations and safety standards.
