There are not enough family doctors: around 500 are missing . And there are no paediatricians in many areas of the island. With cold, flu and resurgence of Covid infections in Sardinia the primary healthcare emergency explodes.
The white coats are subjected to unprecedented pressure: for the whole of December there were those who visited an average of 50 patients a day, rising to 100 in January in around 36 hours of uninterrupted service. It happens in Cagliari, where the gaps in welfare coverage are also reduced. But the situation is similar in Gallura and other territories.
In Oristano, however, the emergency medical service is only operational one day a week.
And now one in two Sardinians turns to private individuals for treatment: previously the ratio was one in five.
