Due to a shortage of reagents, the analysis laboratory at the Santissima Trinità hospital in Cagliari is suspending a long series of tests with immediate effect. And the communication sent to the Local Health Authority on February 10th by the department's director, Marilina Bargone, reveals that the standstill affects numerous activities, all halted for the same reasons.

"Due to the lack of supplies of the diagnostics needed to perform autoimmune and thyroid hormone tests," it reads, "such as anti-citrulline and Ft4 antibodies (the first used for rheumatoid arthritis, ed.) , we are forced to interrupt the tests with immediate effect."

These tests are in addition to those already suspended: CA 19.9 (used to monitor pancreatic cancer), Vitamin B12, Folate (test also performed on pregnant women), Free PSA (for prostate cancer), BNP (cardiological tests), anti-transglutaminase Iga and anti-gliadin Iga antibodies.

"Unfortunately, we've become accustomed to disorganization and improvisation," attacks Paolo Cugliara, the provincial secretary of the Cagliari branch of the Italian National Federation of Healthcare Professionals (FIALS), "but here things are getting worse and worse. The analysis laboratory at Is Mirrionis hospital is down because someone forgot to buy reagents. And this isn't something that happens overnight: it's a sign of a complete lack of planning for essential services."

According to the union representative , "we should hold the company's general manager accountable. But that can't be done: he's not there. So," Cugliara continues, "shall we go to the health commissioner? No, he's not even there because President Todde, who should be involved on a thousand fronts, has decided to keep this crucial responsibility, on which the survival of the Sardinians depends, in her own hands. We're facing a disaster here, but apparently not everyone is clear."
