The worst nightmare of residents and commuters has finally come true: the closure of State Road 195 to repair the section damaged last January by Hurricane Harry will bring residents of the entire southwest coast of the island to their knees this summer.

Two kilometers

As per ANAS regulations, from June 8th to the end of July, traffic will be prohibited on the Sulcis highway between kilometer 7,200 and kilometer 8,900. From the affected section to the outskirts of Cagliari, traffic will be one-way.

The protests

Beniamino Garau, mayor of Capoterra, doesn't mince his words when distancing himself from the decision to begin work at this time, made after the recent meeting with ANAS and the Region: "It's a disgrace. We regret that no one addressed the problems thousands of people will experience at a time of year when, moreover, the population is growing due to tourism. ANAS explained to us that the program agreement with the company that will carry out the work expires in July; if they had waited longer, they would have had to re-tender the work. It remains to be seen why, for such an urgent project, they had to wait six months."

Angelo Dessì, mayor of Sarroch: "The summer will be a nightmare on these roads." Walter Cabasino, mayor of Pula, uses numbers to convey the scale of the hardship: "Our town alone has 7,300 residents, which in the summer exceeds 40,000. A solution like this cannot be adopted at this time; the work should have been scheduled for September. It will be a catastrophe: the tourism sector will suffer immense hardship, as will the residents."
