He weighed just one kilo and, due to a serious congenital heart disease and prematurity, was unable to undergo cardiac surgery. Luca, a twin boy born in Sardinia in the 29th week of pregnancy, was treated at the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital with an innovative, minimally invasive procedure performed entirely via a transcatheter approach. The procedure, performed by the team of the Interventional Cardiology Unit led by Dr. Gianfranco Butera, stabilized the newborn and allowed him to grow while awaiting the definitive cardiac surgery. Weighing just one kilo, the pediatric hospital explains, Luca is the smallest child in the world treated with this combined transcatheter strategy . Approximately three months after the procedure, his weight has more than doubled, reaching 2.5 kilos.
