The wife and daughter of Attilio Cubeddu, who has been on the run since January 1997, will have to leave the family home in Arzana within 120 days. Indeed, to tell the truth, the deadline is now even closer, given that the eviction letter sent by the bailiff on behalf of the state has already been notified for a few days now.

Confiscation

Four years ago, the Supreme Court confirmed the confiscation of the large four-storey house in the center of the town, following the preventive measure requested by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Rome and Cagliari. In reality, the provision of the two district prosecutors had requested to bring to the family of the super-fugitive - inserted by the Ministry of the Interior in second place on the list of the most dangerous, after the head of Cosa Nostra, Matteo Messina Denaro - the entire assets real estate, believing that it had been accumulated with money from the illegal activity. A measure to which the Cubeddus' lawyers had opposed, managing to obtain the return of various assets. Not the large family home, however, built in the early 1980s, when – at least according to the indictment – some kidnappings were still taking place on the island.

Vanished into thin air

Born in Arzana on 2 March 1947, traces of Attilio Cubeddu were lost in 1997, when – taking advantage of a reward permit – he escaped from the Badu 'e Carros prison in Nuoro where he was serving a 30-year prison sentence for the kidnapping of the young woman. Cristina Peruzzi, which took place in the province of Siena in 1981. Since then no one has seen him. He has therefore been on the run for 25 years: there are those who believe he is already dead, those who still think he is in hiding and those who, on the other hand, assume that he has escaped from Italy, safe with a new identity. The fact is that no one knows what happened to him.

The family home

The eviction letter - notified by the bailiff - therefore concerns the confiscated 4-storey building, also with a plot of 500 meters, where his wife and daughter still live. A property which, four years ago, had been valued by the Antimafia at around 400 thousand euros. The National Agency for the Administration of Assets Seized from Crime is responsible for acquiring the property as public property and, once the building has been vacated, will decide whether to convert it for social or institutional purposes. It is not excluded, as has already happened elsewhere, that it is assigned to the police forces involved in the fight against crime.

The peremptory term given to the fugitive's wife, Marisa Caddori, 66, and her second daughter Samuela, 45, to leave the family home is 4 months. Still in Arzana, in another house, the eldest daughter Cristina also lives, while the youngest of the daughters, Valeria, has left her country of origin. It is not yet clear, therefore, where the two women could move.

The uncontrolled rumors

For a quarter of a century now, no one has heard more from the 75-year-old. Every now and then the news circulated that Attilio Cubeddu might be dead, while other times rumors - all of course never confirmed - of hypothetical secret negotiations for him to turn himself in after all these years on the run insistently followed. Meanwhile, the family has always chosen the path of silence, including now that the state has evicted them.
