The inauguration of the 464th academic year of the University of Sassari was held at the Teatro Verdi in Sassari. The guest of honor was Raffaele Fitto, Executive Vice President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Regional and Cohesion Policy. Drawing on current events (the Russian ship off the coast of Sardinia), he emphasized that "Europe must invest in security and defense." He then reassured Europe's attention to the major islands: "Territorial continuity is essential so that young people can choose whether to leave or stay in their own country."
Sardinia Regional President Alessandra Todde recalled the illustrious past of the University of Sassari, "Adelasia Cocco, the first woman in Italy to become a general practitioner, graduated here." She then highlighted how the two Sardinian universities are moving in the right direction, becoming a university open to the local community and acting as qualified partners in the island's bid to host the Einstein Telescope.
In a video, Rector Gavino Mariotti highlighted the university's stats, which rank fourth among medium-sized universities in Italy in terms of indicators. It has over 12,000 students, including 4,309 freshmen, 620 faculty members, and 515 technical, administrative, and library staff. "Over the years, we've spent €70 million on structural and building projects, €1.5 million on corporate welfare, and our counseling service is funded until 2027."
