Professor Mauro Canu, director of the Buonarroti-Volta High School in Guspini since 2019, a school with campuses in Villacidro, Serramanna, and Arbus, passed away last night from an incurable disease at the age of 60. The news left students, faculty, and families in disbelief, who remember him with deep sorrow.
A graduate with honors in Economics and Commerce from the University of Cagliari, he had over twenty years of teaching economics and law and nearly a decade as a special education teacher, an experience that had made him particularly attentive to the most vulnerable children.
He was a principal who carried out his work with commitment and dedication. He cared for his students like a father: strict, but always with their best interests in mind, convinced that school should instill rules and values that could be applied beyond the classroom.
He was among the first to adopt what might have seemed like strict rules. Three years ago, he made an important decision: cell phones had to be turned off and turned in before class, to encourage focus on study and conversation among classmates. A decision that could have sparked discord or been interpreted as a gratuitous stance against the system. But it wasn't. At his school, the results were visible, with clear improvements in social and interpersonal relationships.
Students and colleagues describe him as a demanding leader who believed in respecting the rules, but also as an attentive and present person, capable of listening to students and parents.
On the institute's Facebook page, which is covered in mourning, the school paid its respects with a few poetic verses, followed by these words: "To Mauro Canu, Professor and Principal, who passed away on an autumn day, after a life dedicated to the school. In memory of his passion and dedication, the school community expresses its sorrow for this grave loss. His students, the faculty, and the ATA staff."
