The visit did not go unnoticed and quickly became public knowledge in discussions among the wards and stretchers of San Francesco Hospital. The Guardia di Finanza (Financial Police) arrived at the Nuoro hospital to execute a seizure order for cell phones and electronic devices belonging to the head of cardiology, Mauro Pisano. The order, issued as part of an investigation by the Nuoro Public Prosecutor's Office, is aimed at obtaining a forensic copy of the data contained in the devices, deemed useful for ongoing investigations.
The anomalies
The alleged crime is aggravated fraud against a public entity, linked to irregularities recorded in intramural services. This action is part of broader investigations into healthcare operations and the management of hospital services, which have been closely scrutinized in recent months. The raid took place last week. For now, the allegations are based on irregularities, which are at the heart of the investigation and still need to be verified. However, they have led to the head physician, originally from Lanusei, being placed under investigation. The doctor is being assisted by the lawyer Luciano Rubattu. The case appears to be part of a broader investigation that has already implicated other head physicians in the Nuoro health system.
Physiatrist in trouble
Among the open cases is one concerning Maria Barracca, a physiatrist and director of the rehabilitation unit at Zonchello Hospital in Nuoro. According to the Guardia di Finanza, the manager (represented by attorney Pietro Sanna) is under investigation for aggravated fraud against a public entity, despite having opted for exclusivity—which prohibits private practice outside of authorized facilities—allegedly provided services at a private medical center linked to her husband. Barracca's investigation has been closed; she will appear before a judge who will decide on a committal for trial in October. The alleged anomalous activities date back to 2020. According to prosecutor Riccardo Belfiori, the professional allegedly earned approximately €106,000 from private practice. The investigation is part of a broader investigation into the proper use of exclusivity and the management of intramural activities within the Nuoro public healthcare system.
