Nine school districts cut: the government-appointed commissioner, Francesco Feliziani, has adopted the reduction measure that the Region had resisted.

"The decision was to cut off dialogue with the Region, to ignore the real needs of an island with its own unique characteristics and challenges, and which needs to invest in schools and education," said Councilor for Public Education Ilaria Portas.

"We've been placed under special administration and another nine school authorities have been cut," the councilor continued. "All of this is based on cold calculations that don't even reflect the real numbers. While the Region invests in school buildings, tries to revitalize schools by involving local communities, and vigorously fights dropout and school abandonment, these top-down decisions have the distinct flavor of destruction."

In the last three years, Sardinia has merged 38 school districts: "This," according to the councilor, "merely means there was nothing left to cut. That's why we refused, with good reason. The result was a commissioner being appointed from above, and this further merger is a disaster waiting to happen."
