"I'm thinking of canceling the Armed Forces Day held on November 4th."

The statement was made by the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, during his speech at the party of the newspaper Il Foglio. The announced demonstration planned in Cagliari, in which the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, is also expected to take part, is therefore at risk.

«I'm thinking of canceling it, of not doing it this year», added Crosetto, «because I don't think it's right to increase a risk factor, it's not a normal event. Why should I risk giving a platform to a madman or a series of madmen who want to do something significant? I have the obligation to think of the worst."

The reference is to the climate of tension unleashed by the Hamas attack and Israel's retaliation, which destabilized the Middle East, raising the alert level against terrorism to the maximum in all Western countries.

For the first time, Cagliari was chosen as the location for the Armed Forces celebration: the organisation, entrusted to the Quirinale ceremonial, is already at an advanced stage. The presence of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had also been hypothesized.

The port area of Cagliari was chosen for the celebrations, between 11am and 1pm. The security measures envisaged were exceptional and - considering the high density of shooting ranges on the island, which has always been the subject of controversy - took into account possible anti-militarist initiatives. Now much more dangerous elements have been unleashed.
