This is a hot topic, given recent news reports: thefts, damage, and assaults by non-EU citizens, who were subsequently removed by order of the prefecture "because they were deemed dangerous." This is why Cabras Mayor Andrea Abis has decided to immediately bring before the Council the motion presented a few days ago by opposition councilors.

Gianni Meli, Fenisia Erdas, Federica Pinna, Efisio Trincas, and Antonello Manca requested a detailed analysis of the status of the two reception centers in Cabras, and, if any anomalies or situations incompatible with legal requirements were found, the closure of the facilities.

Meli first read the motion, then spoke off the cuff: " Citizens have many complaints. It would be good to prevent these kids from spending all day on the streets; it would be better to employ them in some activity . We need more controls." Councilor Efisio Trincas reported that a citizen was threatened for not offering a cigarette: "Citizens are afraid ," he said. "Are we sure that these kids inside the center are being looked after by educators capable of doing their job properly?" Antonello Manca: "We're talking about social alarm; that doesn't mean we're racist. We want a more peaceful country." Erdas: "No one is saying we should send anyone away; we're asking for checks to be carried out on the facilities."

Majority Councilor Paola Deiala's watchword is acceptance: "The fact that criminal acts have been committed doesn't mean the community should close down; we have a moral duty to welcome these people." Deputy Mayor Alessandra Pinna: "It all seems very excessive to me. I feel safe." Councilor Carlo Trincas: "Those who commit crimes must be removed, but let's avoid inciting a climate of intolerance toward those fleeing difficult situations."

Social Services Councilor Laura Celletti accuses the opposition of being unclear on the matter: "I'm very perplexed. Your request should be addressed to the prefecture, not to us. These are procedures that politicians have no say in; social services report any problems. I don't see any logic in these requests."

Mayor Abis recalls that many migrants have been hired by local companies: "They're young workers at Cabras, which produces. And I don't tell the prefect how to do his job. Any problems must be reported to the police."

The mayor then proposed voting only on part of the motion, namely the points addressing reception measures and controls, and not the part regarding the inspection of facilities. The minority abstained.
