Sardinia's precarious healthcare workers are once again on the warpath. They're protesting the lack of hiring and are ready to stage another protest before the Regional Council.
Since September 2023, we precarious healthcare workers at the Cagliari University Hospital (AOU) have been fighting resolutely to secure permanent employment, after years of unstable but essential work within public hospitals. We have done so quietly, continuing to work even in the most critical departments, with fragile patients, understaffed, and with grueling shifts. We have applied for every available job, with the sole goal of receiving what we deserve: a stable, dignified contract and recognition for our work. Our colleagues from Local Health Authorities (ASL) 5, 6, and 8, and from Arnas Brotzu, have joined our cause. Yet, to date, while some Sardinian healthcare authorities have already completed the absorption of temporary staff through their own permanent employment rankings, in some cases with just a single hiring freeze, Local Health Authorities (ASL) 5, 6, and 8 still lack their own permanent employment rankings. Meanwhile, the University of Cagliari continues to draw exclusively from the competitive ranking list, deliberately ignoring the regional resolution of April 24, 2025, which imposes a clear principle of fairness: 50% of hires from the competitive ranking list and 50% from the stabilization ranking list.
And they wonder why, under the same conditions, other colleagues, unlike them, have been integrated: "We served during the same period, with the same requirements, the same commitment, and the same risk. It is unacceptable that there are series A and series B stabilizations," recalling that a meeting with President Todde was scheduled for July 31st, but was later canceled, with the promise of a new meeting between August and September.
"To date, no one has called us back. In the meantime, the conversation has shifted to the confederate unions , who for years have failed to protect precarious workers at all, and have often acted to delegitimize their demands. We have sought, in every way, a calm and respectful dialogue with regional politicians and company management. But we found ourselves faced with closed doors." "We want the principle applied to permanent colleagues to apply to everyone. We want equal treatment. We want transparency and, above all, we want those who meet the requirements not to be left behind due to bureaucratic choices, corporate interests, or political indifference."
