A training mission in the Gulf of Cagliari, for an HH-139A helicopter from the 80th SAR (Search and Rescue) center in Decimomannu, turned into a rescue mission for a missing windsurfer.
The alarm was raised in the evening, with the distress call received by the Cagliari Port Authority, after a fifty-eight-year-old man who had been out windsurfing went missing in the Capo Spartivento area .
The Air Force helicopter crew, having reached the area, immediately spotted a windsurfer on a rocky stretch of coast and then found the man attempting to climb up the cliff. Shortly before nightfall , the surfer was rescued by winch and transported to the Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari, where he was entrusted to the care of medics, who had meanwhile been alerted of the arrival of the rescue vehicle.
Since its inception, the crews of the 15th Wing have saved thousands of people in mortal danger. And this time, too, they succeeded.
