Five hours of surgery, a highly complex operation, and a rare medical history: patient Chiara Trudu, 35, from Oristano, recently underwent complex oncological surgery at Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari after a lengthy therapeutic journey marked by numerous treatments and a very rare genetic alteration associated with adnexal tumors. The procedure was performed by the team of the Gynecological Oncology Unit led by Professor Antonio Macciò and included a diaphragmatic peritonectomy combined with a resection of the sigmoid colon and the removal of multiple metastatic lesions spread throughout the upper abdomen, stomach, and midsection.

This surgery is reserved for selected and particularly complex cases, in which the goal is not only to remove the visible disease but to radically reduce the tumor burden while preserving, as much as possible, the patient's "functional balance and quality of life," according to a company statement.

The case addressed by the Brotzu team is also considered a clinical and scientific case of particular interest. The patient's journey is the focus of an international study being published in the scientific journal Diagnostics, dedicated to rare gynecological tumors associated with mutations in the STK11 gene, an exceptional condition in clinical practice.

"Behind procedures like this lies a tremendous multidisciplinary effort, combining surgery, oncology, genetics, anesthesia, and research," explains Professor Antonio Macciò. "Modern oncology surgery today is no longer just surgical technique. It's the ability to care for the individual in all their complexity, developing increasingly personalized treatment plans, even in the rarest cases."

"The goal is to continue to strengthen the island's highly specialized oncology center, capable of offering qualified care even for the rarest and most challenging conditions, reducing healthcare transfers across the Tyrrhenian Sea and allowing patients to undergo delicate treatment while remaining close to their loved ones and their own lives," commented General Manager Maurizio Marcias.
