The new speed camera regulations are now in force in Sardinia. launched by the Government, with automatic speed detection devices that from July 12th, to be compliant, will have to be approved and not just certified.
Adiconsum Sardegna reminds us of this, also providing official figures on municipal revenues and the rules to follow to contest fines.
"For 2025," the association explains, " the record revenue goes to the Municipality of Monastir, which, thanks to speed cameras, collected a whopping €2,051,673. Decimomannu, on the other hand, generated nearly €1.6 million in revenue, while Monserrato recorded €650,000 in speed camera revenue. Cagliari stands at €565,000 , and among the municipalities with the highest revenues are Iglesias with €304,000, Elmas with €265,000, and Nuoro with €122,000."
"With the new rules that went into effect a few hours ago , drivers will have more transparency and a greater ability to contest illegal fines ," explains Giorgio Vargiu, president of the regional Adiconsum organization. "Those who exceed speed limits must be punished, but citizens have the right to certainty about fines, which must be issued by local authorities in compliance with the law and with compliant devices."
Specifically, Adiconsum emphasizes, fines issued after July 12 must include the details of the approval decree for the device used. Drivers can check this information on the national speed camera registry published by the Ministry of Transport , which lists all the details of each device used by local authorities and law enforcement agencies. If the speed camera is not included in the registry, the fine can be appealed . If the device is registered, it is necessary to verify that the make, model, version, and serial number match those reported on the ticket, that the device is among those duly approved, and that periodic calibration and functionality checks have been performed.
As for disputes, the association reminds us, "there are two ways to contest them : by appealing to the Justice of the Peace within 30 days of notification of the fine, or to the Prefect within 60 days of notification. It's important to remember, however, that fines already paid cannot be contested," Vargiu concludes.
