A drastic reduction in road accidents in the city with a minus 22 percent and zero victims.
These are the data provided by the Local Police of Nuoro, the result of the fight against road accidents, with a 22% reduction in accidents in 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year (142 accidents detected to date by the local police compared to 181 in the same period in 2023), and above all without victims and a low degree of injury (only 7 injured in the last quarter with an average of 5 days of prognosis) a trend that differs significantly from the regional picture, where there has been an increase in accidents and road victims.
The Commander of the Nuoro Local Police, Massimiliano Zurru, in office for about seventeen months, has concentrated his efforts from the beginning on improving road safety in the town , where in the first half of 2023 alone there were four deaths, three of which involved pedestrians. "We are aware that every accident represents not only a human tragedy, but also a significant social cost for the entire community. Our objective 1" - underlines Zurru - is clear: to stem this phenomenon through concrete and targeted measures".
"Among the actions undertaken - he continues - the improvement of road signs , essential for safer driving and to reduce critical situations in the most heavily trafficked areas. Emergency intervention to reduce road risks and activation of the Nuoro cittadinanza attiva application. Strengthening of control activities through patrols equipped with advanced systems such as the license plate system to check MOT and insurance, and speed cameras for speed control. Installation of four Speed Boxes in particularly busy arteries of the city (Segni, Repubblica, Sardegna and Funtana Buddia), aimed at discouraging dangerous driving behavior. Intensified services for the control of seat belts and the use of cell phones while driving , two factors often determining accidents. Schools are monitored thanks to the collaboration with voluntary traffic wardens, with the aim of ensuring the safety of students and road users in the vicinity of schools".
These efforts, as the numbers show, have led to concrete results, with a drastic reduction in accidents and zero casualties.
"2024 represents a positive turning point for our city - adds Zurru - a clear signal that prevention and control work . This result is particularly significant considering that, at a regional level, data on road accidents and victims show an opposite trend, with a worrying increase in accidents and human losses. Nuoro, on the other hand, stands out for an effective strategy based on prevention, awareness and rigorous controls. The Local Police of Nuoro will continue on this path, further intensifying control and prevention activities, with the aim of consolidating these results over time and ensuring an increasingly safe city for everyone".
