The work underway for a month to restore the façade and bell tower of the parish church of Santa Barbara in Sinnai is bringing to light a rose window that already appears to be of extraordinary beauty.
It was first hidden by restoration work on the church, then also by the marble that until a month ago covered the same facade and which has now been removed. The rose window can barely be seen: the Superintendency has already intervened and is closely following the progress of the work, which will cost 205 thousand euros, partly financed by the Curia.
The parish will have to pay for part of these works. The discovery of the rose window, which remained hidden for who knows how long, is arousing no small curiosity and interest even if at the moment only a small part of the circular structure can be seen. "We are talking about a rose window of great interest - says the parish priest, Father Gabriele Biccai - obviously we all want it to be entirely brought to light and therefore enhanced. Certainly an architectural jewel that we hope can be admired soon by everyone as soon as the work on the facade is finished".
"The sources - we read in a note from the Sinnai Museum - do not specify the exact year in which the church was completed, but they refer to a date, September 8, 1586, in which the structure of the building had certainly already been completed and which we can consider the "ante quem" of reference". "The original layout of the church, in late Gothic Catalan-Aragonese style, was very different from what we can see today, especially due to a series of reconstruction and expansion interventions that continued from the 17th to the 20th century outside and inside the church".
"The works, already scheduled for some time - says Father Gabriele - are followed by the technicians of the Curia of Cagliari, with the contribution of the CEI (8x1000 of the Catholic Church). The expense exceeds 200,000 euros. Our community will have to participate in the expense for 90,000 euros. A considerable sum that we can only face with everyone's help. We really need everyone's help to continue to guard and conserve the beauty of our Church."
