The fire that devastated hundreds of hectares of Mediterranean scrub and forest in San Gregorio, a hamlet of Sinnai, was started deliberately. At least two ignition points were found along the Vecchia Orientale highway , at a sharp bend a few hundred meters from the village. From there, the flames spread rapidly , attacking the undergrowth, destroying trees and reeds, and damaging and threatening homes and structures .

Civil Protection remains heavily mobilized today. The fire was only extinguished at dawn this morning, but there are still dangerous fires, where a helicopter continues to operate with numerous water jets.

On the ground, under the stifling heat, among blackened shrubs and devastated reeds, the men on the ground are working: those from the Forestas Agency, the Forestry Corps, and volunteers from VAB, Masise, and Il Maestrale. A group of French nationals stationed in Sardinia have also arrived with their own men and equipment. A large-scale mobilization aimed at averting any further potential danger.

The house attacked by flames last night, just steps from the historic part of the village, where an old vintage car also went up in flames, has been closed and declared uninhabitable.

And it could have been worse, everyone agrees: the damage was limited by the firefighting machinery and the large team of Civil Protection volunteers . They worked for hours from above and on the ground. Now, once the area has been cleared, it will be possible to make an accurate assessment of the damage, which is not insignificant.

"Sinnai has been struck to the heart," Mayor Barbara Pusceddu wrote on social media, thanking everyone involved in the firefighting operations and providing assistance to the population.
