A small, mysterious, round sinkhole about 6 meters in diameter and over 3 meters high suddenly appeared on Santa Caterina beach last weekend.
No alien phenomenon, just a sort of sinkhole with a puddle of water inside. An event, while unusual in these parts, most likely natural, although a scientific assessment of the phenomenon by experts from the Regional Property Office is pending. Meanwhile, the Municipality, with an order from Mayor Andrea Loche, has cordoned off and closed off the area to safeguard public safety, pending a thorough assessment by the relevant regional offices.
One plausible hypothesis seems to be the infiltration of rainwater, following this winter's heavy rainfall , which, penetrating the subsoil, has patiently eroded part of the underground bedrock, causing this small, circular depression in a portion of the shoreline. These phenomena typically occur in geographical areas subject to karstification, including coastal zones, where rivers and streams flow, and right nearby, the Rio Santa Caterina flows into the sea.
"We've closed off the area and are now waiting for the State Property Agency and the Regional Landscape Protection Office to analyze the situation and determine how to intervene, hoping for a solution as soon as possible," Mayor Loche explains. However, by next summer, it could become a new tourist attraction for the enchanting Santa Caterina Bay.
